4.0 out of 5 stars Almost!, April 21, 2011
This review is from: Elite VSX-31 A/V Receiver (Electronics)
Incredibly highly functional receiver for a great price. I originally was looking at the VSX-30 but then after I learned you can play iPod to Zone 2 I went with this one. A couple of words of caution, which is why this receiver gets four instead of five stars:

- I upgraded my existing receiver because I needed more HDMI inputs and wanted to have a second zone, i.e., I wanted to install patio speakers. I also bought Apple TV and really wanted to stream via Apple TV to my patio speakers. The manual says the VSX-31 allows for iPod output to Zone 2 and so I incorrectly thought this meant I could take a digital source, i.e., an HDMI input, to Zone 2. Wrong. This receiver does not output digital signals (except for iPod and Internet Radio) to Zone 2. The manual isn't quite clear on this. In the receiver's defense, using the supplied cable for the iPod/iPhone works fine and is an upgrade over the VSX-30. I have not tried Pandora thru my iPhone yet.

In short, works great if all you need is to hook up few A/V devices via HDMI.

However, I hit limitations very fast. Two things that I simply can't get to work:

1) If TV is off when receiver is turned on, there is no sound output to speakers. Why would somebody have TV off? For example, if you want to listen radio (via built-in tuner), or if you have some audio-only device connected to it (say, CD-player). Why TV must be turned on to have sound from audio-only sources output to speakers is a mystery. Once you turn on receiver, TV can be turned off, and audio will still be output to the speakers. But turning this unit on first, then TV, results in no sound. It's annoying...

2) Connecting PC via DVI-HDMI cable. With this cable, there is no sound via HDMI, you need to use separate audio cable. No problems, one would think, and be wrong. You can't configure unit to use separate audio connection for something connected to HDMI port, except for... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Pioneer Ellite VSX-31, November 21, 2010
This review is from: Elite VSX-31 A/V Receiver (Electronics)
Amazing!!!!!!!!! I had a very high end Yamaha receiver that was about six years old that I was replacing. I had paid over $1,500.00 for the Yamaha. I was reluctant to purchase the VSX-31 as I only paid about $450.00 on it on sale. I worried how it would stack up to the much more costly but older Yamaha. I was blown away the sound! The sound was cleaner and more powerful. The directions were fantastic! I got the receiver hooked up easily. The 3-D pass through works well. The internet radio feature is awesome. Its THX certified. Great receiver for the price point! I haven't hooked up my I Pad and Control 4 system up to it yet so I can't speak how well that works. In my opinion It is much more attractive than most other receivers. You won't be sorry about this purchase.
