I bought this to replace a 3 year old Onkyo that died from a bad HDMI circuit. The most impressive thing about it is how cool it runs while still delivering sound that is every bit as refined (to my ears) as the more expensive and much more power hungry Onkyo.

But the main problem with this thing is the lousy user interface. I know that UI probably isn't your first concern when it comes to a receiver, but companies like Apple have raised the bar on this, and when you get a UI that would have been substandard in 1995 (no exaggeration), it's hard not to be disappointed.

The on-screen display is black-and-white, text-only, all caps and fixed width, and it FLICKERS to boot (on my 1080p display at least). There is no overlay, so no visual feedback when you change the volume, etc. The response time for changing inputs or connecting a camera is up to several seconds. The remote is especially difficult to program (for example, no LED to tell you when it's ready for... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Stay away from Pioneer, December 30, 2011
This review is from: Pioneer VSX921K 7.1-Channel 3D Ready AV Receiver - Black (Electronics)
I bought this as a replacement for my old VSX-D309, and was very happy with it until it quit working roughly 80 days after purchasing it. The unit no longer sends any form of audio to the speakers yet still sends video to the tv (for those wondering i have checked all the settings including resetting it to factory defaults as well as checking all the connections). I called Pioneer who not only didnt seem surprised by the issue also didnt really seem to care about it, no questions about what happened or what i was doing when the problem started, nor did they offer any suggestions to try before telling me that it would have to be shipped in and expecting me to pay for shipping to have it repaired. After doing some checking around online i find im not the only one to have issues with Pioneer customer service and them selling what is imo a defective product, then forcing the consumer to spend more money to have the defective device fixed. I remember the days when Pioneer made a pretty... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars It works for my needs, July 4, 2012

It was inexpensive and was suited for my needs. Nothing to shout about. I just wanted the surround for certain movies that I watch and it does the trick. The pitfalls are that unless your local television station broadcasts in stereo you only get the center speaker for mono. My old Kenwood would compensate and push it out as stereo. I just didn't want to have to spend a 1000 plus to replace it since I don't use it as often as I used too. You also need a powered subwoofer to get this thing going full tilt another expense I didn't count on. Oh Well it would have helped to have done a little more research prior to buying the first thing I could afford.
